Malware Blog > Seasons Greetings from Malware Authors, part 3

Here’s another malware riding the holiday bandwagon: WORM_NUWAR.AY.

TrendLabs has received several infection reports concerning this new NUWAR variant spreading in the wild. Like its previous variants, this worm spreads via email. What’s interesting about this iteration, though, is that instead of the “usual” method of arriving as an attachment to nuclear-war-and-presidential-death email messages, this worm greets its users a “Happy New Year!”

Of course, when unsuspecting users open the attached worm copy disguised as a postcard (the email doesn’t have a message body, which increases the chances they may be tricked into thinking that the rest of the greetings are in the attachment), they will be starting the year with a migraine.
