As the largest pure-play security software vendor in the world, Trend Micro has for the past 26 years been protecting users across the globe from everything the bad guys can throw at us. Yet in recent times, as our digital lives have widened and deepened, so has our potential exposure to information-stealing malware, privacy issues, identity theft and more. Just one look on Facebook or Twitter will show you the daily battle these platforms have to spot and block spam, fraud and other malicious behaviour. The challenge for us going forward therefore is to ensure your files and private information remains safe from harm as you are emailing, socializing and browsing online.
A dangerous place
It’s easy to feel invincible online, especially if you’ve never personally been hit by spam, scams and malware. Yet as people flock online in ever greater numbers – to share pictures, music and videos; hang out with friends; do their banking; shop and much, much more – the bad guys follow too. It’s all about the money. They want your personal info to sell on to others or use to commit ID fraud. They may even be looking to infect your device or PC with malware, allowing them to control it remotely from anywhere in the world.
It’s no surprise then, that from 2006-2012 alone there was a staggering 11,000 percent increase in new unique threats spotted per day, from 57 in 2006 to 6,300 in 2012, according to Trend Micro data. What’s more, 50 percent of US citizens have been infected with a virus caught online, while there’s one new ID fraud victim every three seconds, according to Javelin Strategy & Research.
It’s not just the cybercriminals we have to worry about online, though. We’re our own worst enemies sometimes. A Trend Micro poll last year found a quarter of social media users have posted something on websites that they later regretted or removed. That’s not to mention the legions of cyber bullies, trolls and other undesirables stalking the internet. It all makes socializing online a privacy nightmare, made no better by our too laid back approach to social media privacy settings. Only a quarter of Facebook users change their settings each month or more often, yet 36 percent told us they’ve seen something they regard as inappropriate on social media.
