The not-so private lives of celebrities: there’s one topic that will surely rouse chatter and gossip… and may also bring malware into systems.
Britney Spears, the news more than the person herself, is being used by malware authors in their activities. With news zooming in on her recent hospitalization, email messages with a link that proclaims: “Download and Watch the stupid Britney Video!” are also being actively spammed out.
The link, which takes advantage of Yahoo!‘s redirection services, points users to a malicious Web site. A file detected heuristically by Trend Micro as Possible_DLDER is downloaded from the said Web site.
Still another redirection would lead affected users to another malicious IP address, where another file is downloaded. Trend Micro detects this said file as TROJ_AGENT.GNR.
Britney would not be the first celebrity, and sure won’t be the last, whose name was dragged into spamming and malicious online activities. Paris Hilton, after her announcement in February 4 that she was going lesbian, was the subject of spammed email messages that also contained a Trojan detected as TROJ_DLOADER.FV.
The lives of famous personalities are pretty interesting news. While there are people who scoff at the apparent silliness and shallowness of celebrity news, curiosity sometimes prevails. Of course malware is never entertaining, so inquisitive minds beware.
