Information technology is a great invention and giant step for humankind, almost as much the invention of paper and pen, because it enables the freedom and convenience of information sharing, which promotes and enhances the opportunity to learn, grow and prosper no matter where we are born and how we are raised (both for businesses and individuals).
That is why Cloud Computing is even more exciting. Its capability to correlate, compute and mine humongous amounts of unstructured data eventually will produce new applications that produce new knowledge to benefit more people. Just think of how the search engine, the first cloud computing application, enabled the whole internet and how we can gain knowledge about anything from every place in the world through a web browser.
Unfortunately, the benefit does not come free. Cloud computing is a great tool for both good applications and bad applications. Information sharing can end up with information in the wrong hands, such as hackers who steal identities.
With the structural change that is happening with cloud computing–where the hardware (Infrastructure as a Service or IaaS), the system operation and the application (Software as a Service or SaaS) and the data (data storage) are all separated in different locations and maybe with different vendors–the traditional wisdom in information security of “securing my network” is vanishing into the no-boundary cloud.
It is a great challenge, and also an exciting opportunity to re-think security and plan the optimal security infrastructure for cloud computing. As security experts, it is our responsibility and opportunity to play that core role to enable safe and convenient information sharing for the world.
What enables the aircraft is not just the wings but also the landing gear, fins, rudders, computer systems, and radar that altogether make safe commercial flight possible. Cloud computing, as exciting as the Wright brothers first flight, now needs its landing gear, fins, rudders, computer systems, and radar to complete the innovation — cloud security. This is how we want to contribute to this exciting cloud computing era — by providing a world safe for exchanging digital information, through the cloud!
