We have been collectively saying in our industry for the last 15-20 years that a layered approach to your security stack is a “best practice,” but as with all best practices, these are ideals rather than reality for so many charged with protecting their organizations. The vast majority of CISOs are saddled with legacy operating…

Verizon recently released a 5 step process for evaluating cloud security products and services to inform purchase decisions. That’s a fantastic tool for buyers to have. This is especially helpful because cloud discussions are almost always driven by business objectives to satisfy a cost and or productivity problem. The CISO has to come in and…

At Trend Micro, we’ve always been keen to collaborate with law enforcement. While we do our best to protect our customers from the latest threats, it’s only with concerted cross-border police action against the perpetrators of these crimes that we can hope to swing the pendulum back in our favor. One common target of attack…

I personally had a great week last week. Trend Micro was very fortunate to participate in and sponsor the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) 2018 Conference and Expo and the IBM Cyber Day 4 Girls at Florida International University (FIU). I truly tip my hat to FIU as…

By Ed Cabrera, Chief Cybersecurity Officer for Trend Micro and Martin Bally, Vice President & Chief Security Officer for Diebold Nixdorf  Where there’s money, there has always been crime. Traditional bank robbery and physical assaults on ATMs are still a challenge, and now a new breed of cyber-enabled theft—using ATMs as the endpoint for cash-outs— has become a multibillion-dollar…

Today’s highly automated and connected smart factories (Industry 4.0) were born out of yesterday’s steam engines that mechanized manufacturing (Industry 1.0); mass-production lines expanded with the advent of electricity (Industry 2.0); and then IT-enabled manufacturing plants ushered in the era of connected industrial control systems with programmable logic controllers (PLC). While enterprises struggle to enhance…

The WannaCry outbreak that reportedly raked in US$1B in damage costs also forced doctors to cancel scheduled appointments, among other things, brought on warranted concern over pervasive ransomware attacks that could stem from oft-overlooked components of healthcare networks—exposed medical cyber assets and third-party partners. It’s a well-known fact that advances in medical technology and information…

Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is getting harder every day. According to the World Economic Forum‘s 2018 Global Risks Perception Survey, cyber attacks and data theft are 3 and 4 respectively of the top 5 likely risks organizations will face this year. This is not surprising, in 2017 CISOs the world over faced crippling ransomware attacks,…

This last week of National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM), we focus on critical infrastructure (CI). For many years now we have discussed and seen the result of poorly designed and protected control system networks. I wrote on this very topic back in 2016. Now the threat landscape has evolved further and the attack surface…
