Ah, yes, the Holidays are here!
For those of us who love to give but hate to shop at the mall, the Internet has been a godsend. Shopping online allows us to visit multiple e-stores and compare prices and products without have to brave the elements or put up with the insane and often mean-spirited crowds.
However, the convenience and efficiency may come with an unexpected price tag. Cyber grinches are around every virtual corner, just waiting for you to mess up. Or maybe they’re even setting traps so that you fall for scams or reveal TMI that can then lead to identity theft and compromised financial accounts.
We don’t want to see this happen to you or anyone. So here are a few key recommendations we pulled from the latest TrendLabs E-guide:
- Only shop online when you know you’re connected to a secure network. As long as you keep your device and home network secure, you can enjoy safe, uninterrupted shopping sessions there
- Secure your shopping environment. External factors like using a public PC can have a drastic effect on the safety of your shopping session. For example, an infected computer can do a world of harm, even if you limit your shopping to legitimate sites
- Always assume something isn’t right. It’s easy to become dazzled and overwhelmed by “special” offers or “deals” that seem too good to be true. Activate your B.S. meter and be very cynical to avoid being duped
- Never use a payment method that doesn’t offer buyer protection. Wire transfers and money orders are not recommended for online purchases because you have no way of getting your money back once you’ve sent it
