Securing the Hybrid Cloud – our focus at IBM InterConnect 2016

As I sit here at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas during this year’s IBM InterConnect, I watch thousands of people networking and sharing information.  It strikes me how many security layers big event locations like this must implement to host a conference this size. Security in this environment includes everything from the hundreds of security personnel with “feet on the street” to complex video systems throughout the facilities. Casinos have committed to investing in appropriate security controls to ensure they can handle the rigor of such massive conferences and the need for security

At our Trend Micro booth (#401), we get the chance to speak with many IT and security leaders and we discuss a particular challenge they are faced with: the difficulty to secure complex hybrid cloud environments. “Hybrid cloud” is generally used to refer to any of these three common scenarios:

  • datacenter and private cloud
  • multiple public clouds (eg. IBM SoftLayer, AWS, Microsoft Azure, VMware vCloud Air)
  • private and public clouds

However, it’s the later hybrid cloud scenario (private and public clouds) that creates the most operational security concerns for organizations. Time and again we hear about organizations that tried to take their legacy physical server security solution and apply it to virtualized private cloud and public cloud environments. Yet, they all quickly realize that these solutions create a series of new challenges for their data center operations and security teams:

  • Legacy security products don’t adequately protect against major vulnerabilities like Shellshock and Heartbleed – and it is unlikely they are prepared for the next advanced threat or vulnerability.
  • Data center operations teams are faced with the challenge of managing multiple legacy security solutions with numerous different interfaces and consoles. They often encounter security gaps between adding a virtual machine or cloud instance and provisioning security to quickly protect the new workloads as they come on line.
  • Legacy physical server security solutions applied to virtualized environments often create significant system performance issues because they are not optimized to run in complex environments such as VMware vSphere or NSX.

In the same way that casinos have implemented security processes that are specifically designed for their environment Trend Micro Deep Security was purpose-built to help organizations secure their hybrid cloud environments. Deep Security is unique in three key ways:

  1. It is the only security solution that can secure workloads across physical, virtual and cloud environments.
  2. It enables a complete set of security controls from a single product: web reputation, intrusion prevention, firewall, integrity monitoring, log inspection and anti-malware.
  3. It is fully optimized to work with leading cloud and virtualization platforms such as IBM SoftLayer, AWS, Microsoft Azure, VMware vCloud Air and more.

One of the key conversations we’re having at IBM InterConnect is about the importance of making the acquisition and deployment of data center and cloud security software as simple as possible. Organizations are looking for flexible approaches to deploy security across their workloads. Primarily, they look for different options to acquire the security they require. Deep Security offers a range of options for these organizations.

  • Traditional software
  • Software as a service
  • AWS and Azure marketplaces

Recently, IDC Research recognized Trend Micro as the leader in server security market share for the 6th consecutive year[1]. IDC estimates Trend Micro holds over 30% market share in this fast growing space. I encourage you to look through some great customer success stories to learn more on why customers have selected Trend Micro Deep Security.

So, as casinos continue to try and stay one step ahead of the bad guys with security built for their unique challenges, let’s ask ourselves the question: Are your data center operations teams doing the same to ensure you have the most advanced security controls to protect hybrid cloud environments?
