Is it me or does it seem like the bad guys always want to mess up everyone’s holiday weekend? Instead of hunting for Easter eggs and candy, many will end up searching and patching vulnerable systems. Earlier this week, a highly critical security advisory was issued by Drupal, one of the biggest open-source web content management platforms. Drupal has already issued patches for versions 6, 7, and 8 and highly recommends upgrading to the latest versions.

If you are a Trend Micro customer using TippingPoint solutions, the following DVToolkit CSW file has been issued to mitigate the Drupal vulnerability:

DVToolkit CSW file CVE-2018-7600.csw (includes the following filters):

  • Filter C1000001: HTTP: Drupal Core Multiple Subsystems Input Validation Vulnerability (GET)
  • Filter C1000002: HTTP: Drupal Core Multiple Subsystems Input Validation Vulnerability (POST)

These filters detect an attempt to exploit an input validation vulnerability in Drupal Core. The specific flaw exists due to an improper sanitization of HTTP parameter names. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute arbitrary commands under the security context of the server. User authentication is not required to exploit this vulnerability. Customers with any questions or who need assistance deploying these filters can visit the Threat Management Center or click here for updated support contact information.

The Trend Micro support team has pulled together all the latest information regarding this latest vulnerability, nicknamed Drupalgeddon2, on the following support page. You can also get Mark Nunnikhoven’s perspective on this vulnerability on his blog post.

Zero-Day Filters

There are 17 new zero-day filters covering nine vendors in this week’s Digital Vaccine (DV) package. A number of existing filters in this week’s DV package were modified to update the filter description, update specific filter deployment recommendation, increase filter accuracy and/or optimize performance. You can browse the list of published advisories and upcoming advisories on the Zero Day Initiative website. You can also follow the Zero Day Initiative on Twitter @thezdi and on their blog.
