Banks are offering more features and upgrades for their banking apps, and thanks to their convenience more users are adopting mobile banking services around the world. But as new financial technology proliferates and users start to look for apps and other services from their particular bank, opportunities for scammers also increase. One recent example of this is the app Movil Secure. We found this malicious app on Google Play on October 22, as part of a SMiShing scheme targeting Spanish-speaking users.

DressCode and its Potential Impact for Enterprises

Threats to mobile users have grown quickly in the span of only a few months. Trend Micro’s Mobile App Reputation Service (MARS) has counted 16.6 million malware detections as of August 2016, a 40% leap from detections listed in January. The Android platform continues to be particularly susceptible, with one specific malware family called “DressCode” steadily and stealthily spreading since April before reports about it surfaced in August. This malware gives attackers an avenue into internal networks which compromised devices are connected to—a notable risk if the device is used to connect to company networks.

Using multiple devices that run on one platform makes life easier for a lot of people. However, if a malware affects one of these devices, the said malware may eventually affect the others, too. This appears to be the case when we came across an Android mobile lock-screen ransomware, known as “FLocker,” that is capable of locking smart TVs as well.
